May 13, 2009

Sad news today that photo historian, publisher, author and photographer BILL JAY passed away in his sleep on Sunday in his recently adopted hometown of Samara on the Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica. I received the news from colleagues at Arizona State University and have yet to learn more from Bill’s family. Follow link for more:

Weekly Shoots

We would like to schedule a shoot a week at various type of locales and time of day now that the weather is getting warmer. Please send in your suggestions and I'll put it on the calendar. Let's start off with keeping them within a 50 mile radius of the beltway.

Urban Decay

Braddock Pennsylvania (this is the towns homepage) is the steel town that has been slowly dying since the 70's.

The coal fire underneath the town that I mentioned is Centralia PA. There are many websites that cover this town, here are a few:

http://www.offroaders.com/album/centralia/centralia.htm
http://www.xydexx.com/modernruins/centralia.htm this site has a message board
http://www.pahighways.com/features/centralia.html scroll halfway down this page and watch the you tube video
http://www.thetownthatwas.com/ A documentary about Centralia.

Times Beach was a town that poisoned itself with Dioxin trying to reduce the dust on their dirt roads. The town had to be abandoned, and after years of cleanup by the EPA and hundreds of millions of dollars its now a state park.
